Spirit and Friendship

Spirit~ "Nature always wears the color of spirit." -Emerson

Spirit holds an important role in the life of a Transcendentalist. These great thinkers believed that to find meaning, you had to realize your purpose and what your spirit desired to be. They heartily believed that nature helped many people to recognize their purpose. The main idea behind this belief: Nature reflects the state of mind and heightens self-awareness. Nature's infinite wisdom was seen as "the organ through which the universal spirit speaks to the individual and strives to lead back the individual to it." Nature speaks to us, and we must recognize this so we can search for our overall purpose. The only way to find meaning in life is to understand your spirit and place in life as given to you by nature and divinity.

The relationships of the "over-soul" to nature and other humans compose the spirit of a being.

The picture above, Oversoul by Alex Grey, is a known transcendental art work. The artist focuses on the connection between mind, body, and spirit, a major tenet of Trascendentalism.

Friendship~
"The indulgence of this human affection...from the highest degree of passionate love, to the lowest degree of good-will, they make the sweetness of life." -Emerson

Friendship holds great importance in the way of happiness. Humans have an inherent want and need for friendship and it inadvertently helps them find their own meaning and spirit, according to Emerson. Friendship and the confidence and reassurance of others helps one to find meaning in their own life. Friendship, creating important relationships between humans and heightening awareness of a human's own self, is an important transcendental tenet.
